Dear Coach:

The Orange County “Lawmen” Police Football Team is proud to announce the continuation of the “Robert (Bob) Henry Memorial Scholarship”.  This scholarship will be awarded in June to a graduating high school student / athlete who most exemplifies the character and morals of the person the scholarship is named for.

Bob Henry was a Newport Beach Police Officer.  He was killed in the line of duty in 1995.  Bob was also an amateur athlete.  He is the only member of the Orange County “Lawmen” Police Football Team to lose his life in the line of duty.

Bob was not a star player.  He was not a specially gifted athlete.  He was that guy/gal on your team who maybe is a starter or a first second stringer, who gave his/her all to help the team.  He was  the “spirit” person.  The one who never got down and helped everyone stay up. He was the team member who would give a team mate the shirt off his back if it would help that person or the team.  He was also the one who was early to every practice and the last to go home.  He was the one who gave 110% all the time and loved doing it.  He was the guts of the team which allowed the stars to shine.

Bob was also a dedicated student but one who had to work hard to get a “B”.  Not the type of person to receive a scholarship for scholastics, but a student who you knew would succeed at college.  He was that student who was most deserving of a scholarship, one who would make very good use of it, but the one who would NOT get the scholarship.  We are looking for this person.  To give this person a little help to get ahead in life.

The players of the Orange County “Lawmen” Police Football Team play to raise money for high school athletics and other youth oriented programs.  We are truly interested in helping kids get ahead.  We feel that this scholarship program will go a long way toward helping kids for years to come.  To do this we need your help.

We need you to submit two names of student/ athletes who match the listed criteria.  They must be a graduating senior,  active in sports and going to a college or university in the fall.  This student must be, as described above, the heart of the team and not receiving any scholarship for his/her athletic or scholastic prowess.   This kid must have a “Lyon Heart, with a side as soft as a Lamb”.

We would like one male and one female athlete applicant from each school.  If there are two athletes of the same sex who meet the criteria then submit both names accordingly.  The scholarship is open to athletes from any and all sports.

To nominate a person for the scholarship you need to submit a letter of nomination outlining the reasons that this person should be considered and supplying the  committee  with  the  candidates name, address and phone number.   The candidate must submit a written statement along with the nomination letter.  The statement must outline why the candidate feels he/she should be considered  for the scholarship, what his/her plans for college are, a synopsis of his/her high school career, and his/her career goals.

Each nominee will be carefully considered by the Orange County Cop Bowl Committee. The top ten candidates will be required to attend an oral interview.  At the conclusion of the oral interview, the scores will be tabulated and the scholarship will be awarded to the candidate with the highest rating.

Coach, in today’s battles with drugs and other ills of society, you know as well as we in the police field how many of our youth are lost for ever each year.  Help us help a kid make it in this pressure packed world.   Help us save a career, a life, a deserving kid.  Send us the names of your qualified candidates.  Give that one special kid a real chance.

Please send your nomination to “Orange County Cop Bowl, Bob Henry Scholarship Candidate, Attention Officer Rick Bradley, 870 Santa Barbara, Newport Beach, Ca. 92660.    The scholarship will hopefully be presented to the winner at his/her graduation in June.

Thank you for your assistance.
